Committee Reports
Window Decorations - Eileen Bridgelall
10 windows were decorated for fall
We can go to School for the Blind for students to decorate windows also
Parkville Middle School may be able to help with this project. There are
only 10 $25.00 gift certificates we have to offer to the schools as
prizes. We will need to conduct the window decorating program with
prizes instead of the business association can contribute some of the
funds needed to award to the students for their work.
Clean-up cost was also built into the grant from Baltimore County Police
Department. Pizza has been served to the students who participated in
the program. The businesses who had their windows done also volunteered
to feed the students.
A suggestion was made to post a sign on the window stating who decorated
the window and what school sponsored. The signs will be placed in each
window. Another need for the windows is access to water to clean
brushes.
Open House - Beverly Weber
Beverly went to check out the VFW Hall and the VFW Post on Harford Road
has agreed to supply the hall at no cost to the Business Association. We
will have to supply on refreshments for the function. A suggestion was
made to have the local restaurants set up tables with samples of foods
on their menus as part of the refreshments for the public. There will
also be a fee for advertisement on the marquee in front of the VFW Hall.
Web Page - Jane Bissell
Our web page is up and running. The address is
www.parkvillecarney.com. Up dates are sent in each week. Photos need to
be taken of each event so they can be posted on the web page.
Street Scape - Dick Forstner
Final Meeting for StreetScape. Funding has been approved for the
engineering step and will be issued in July 2003. The next step will be
budgeting for construction. The work should begin in 2005.
Some of our requests have been changed and we need to work to get
these areas back in the budget.
The flashing indicators at the library have been cut.
Medians around the CVS store have been cutout because of business
owner concerns.
The traffic light at Emerald Road is still in the plan and is
scheduled with in the next couple of months.
No parking will be lost due to StreetScape except in the event of a
crosswalk being placed then a minimum number of spaces will be lost.
Joppa Road Study
At the meeting Joppa Road corridor was divided into sections like
was done with Harford Road. Then recommendations will be taken for each
area. The study covers from Perring Parkway to Belair Road.
The area will be walked for possible changes that need to occur for
safety and public concerns.
Social Events - Lisa Leonard
We are looking into having a Shrimp Feast in the spring.
Thank You to Ruth Baisden for cleaning the area around the new bus
stop at Harford Road and Taylor Avenue. They also planted bulbs at the
Circle Park.
Membership - Rita Winiecki
The membership drive will begin in mid December. The 2003 membership
applications will be mailed with the December newsletter. On the back of
each application is an additional information sheet. The new information
that is needed is 150 words for the web page; Business cards attached
for the map and information section for the trade show in April. There
are a lot of free services being offered this year and gathering the
necessary information for each business is crucial. There is a dues
increase of $10.00, taking our dues to $50.00 per calendar year. Also
Handouts have been designed to hand to businesses that are not current
members. The flyers will be made available at the next meeting.
There is also a handout for all committee members with contact names
and numbers.
Welcoming Committee - Mary Beth Flowers
The welcoming committee meets the first Monday of each month. The
committee has asked the members to keep an eye out for any new
businesses to come into the area and report the business to the
association to the committee. You can fax the information to Mary Alessi
at 410-296-6741. Baskets will be given to each new business with
information on the Business Association as well as trinkets from
members. Please drop off any promotional merchandise to Mary Beth at
Flowers by Flowers. Key chains, Pencils, Pens, Fridge Magnets, Calendars
etc. would work well in the baskets.
Safety - Ed Borman
There is a bad graffiti problem currently in the Parkville Area.
Tags have been seen throughout the area.
All the normal avenues to identify the makers of the tags have been
exhausted. The same types of tags have been popping up in the city as
well. Fobber is the tag that the police are looking for. If anyone sees
kids with paint cans call 911 immediately to try to catch these
individuals. There have several areas where kids have been hanging late
at night and the Police Department is patrolling these areas. Cleaning
the graffiti is left up to the individual businesses if the artist is
not caught. Report any new tags to Ed Borman.
Hand out of an individual who is responsible for street robberies in
the areas. He is armed and has used his gun in one of the robberies.
JOINS
The JOINS kids were working last Saturday raking leaves in the
circle on Taylor Avenue. They gathered 35 bags of leaves. They are only
available for 4 hours each time out.
CRAG - Jane Bissell and David Silwick
At the last meeting State Highway, Department of Public Works and
Recs. And Parks for the County were in attendance. The organizations
were discussing the types of services they will provide to the
communities. Parks and Rec. will trim the trees as high as they can
reach. Department of Public Works will replace burned out lights in
street posts and take care of other odds and ends that need to be
maintained. State Highway will clean the streets and also help with
contacts with other jobs that need to be done, cars that are unclaimed
or need to be moved. It is our responsibility to keep the area in front
of our businesses clean of trash and litter. If there is a problem call
John Cluster to forward to the appropriate department. January 6, 2003
will be the next meeting for CRAG. The members should report any
neglected property to the board of directors so we can make contact with
the business or property owners about the problems.
